Nutter Farm

After hand digging the potato crop for a few years, it was obvious that a more efficient method was warranted.  After researching all of the small farm potato harvesters available around the globe, we settled on the I&J potato plow because of cost and simplicity.  This plow cost 300 new and the other harvesters ranged from 2800-3500.  The plow is not perfect but it works.  It took my wife and I about an hour to collect 100#s of potatoes or about 5 times faster than hand digging. The tines of the plow are visible in the bottom of the picture.  The crop is Dark Red Norlands and the yield was poor at 9#s per pound of seed.  We would prefer 15#s per pound but we have not had adequate rain.
