Phenology

Yesterday I saw a dragonfly.  For me, this is the latest adult dragonfly that I have seen in any given year during the fall. I didn’t get a good look at it but I assume it is of this type, the Autumn Meadowhawk.

The science of phenology is a study in the timing of the seasons.  It asks, when did the first red-winged blackbird arrive during spring migration or what date does the red maple bloom every year?  There are many long term studies of such events in nature and the longer they are conducted, the better we can see that our climate is changing.
