Rarity for the Naturalist

Black Ice and the sounds it makes on a pond are two of the most haunting of experiences.  To lay down on the black ice and peer into the depths doesn’t happen often.  One can watch the water beetles swim past, find an air bubble below the ice and tank up for another dive. All the while, the ice is expanding and the fracturing of the ice is not much different than being in the vicinity of a glacier as it calves off icebergs.

Our black ice lasted but one day this year, January 16.  That night a brief snow covered it and the following rain sealed the ice with a cloud.
